LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - The assessor in Comanche County has
resigned while a prosecutor reviews the results of an investigation
into the assessor's office.
County commissioners on Monday accepted the resignation of
Assessor Charlotte Hamilton.
Hamilton's attorney said only that Hamilton decided that
resigning is the appropriate action.
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation has been looking into
allegations that Hamilton's office paid an outside contractor to do
work that was performed by her office's employees.
District Attorney Dennis Smith says he's reviewing the OSBI
report and likely will decide within two weeks whether to file
Hamilton's race for re-election ended in a Democratic primary
loss last week.
