Arrest of ex-Reno prep football star signed at OK

RENO, NV. (AP) - A former Nevada prep star who signed a letter of intent last month to play football at Oklahoma has been arrested by sheriff's deputies in Reno for obstructing a peace officer.

Washoe County sheriff's spokesman Amrando Avina says former Hug High receiver Courtney Gardner was a passenger in a vehicle stopped about 1 a.m. on Sunday.

He told the Reno Gazette-Journal Gardner became belligerent during the arrest of the 20-year-old driver, Adrian Smith Jr., for suspicion of DUI.

Avina says the deputy smelled alcohol and marijuana before someone in the vehicle said, "Don't you know who we are? We're Division I athletes.'"

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Gardner played the last two seasons at Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif. He gave a verbal commitment to Arkansas but later switched to the Sooners.
