ECU basketball player recognized for accomplishments off the court

ADA, OK -- Over 200 college basketball student athletes have been nominated for the 2014 Allstate NABC and WBCA Good Works Teams.

It's an award that recognizes student athletes for outstanding community service, and one of the greatest awards that Miles Mitchell says he's ever been nominated for.

"It's a blessing," Mitchell said. "I mean it's exciting and really humbling, but for me it's kind of a daily thing, so it's really just humbling to be recognized for something like that, for being a good servant."

The ECU Men's Basketball player has been nominated out of all Division I, Division II, Division III, and NAIA players across the country.

Mitchell has worked with foster children and the Boys and Girls Club. He's passionate about service, and hopes to make a difference anyway he can.

"Being a college athlete, people kind of look up to us, especially when we work with younger kids," Mitchell said. "So it's a really good opportunity to be a role model and to get to teach them some things that will help them be a better young person, and be a better friend."

Head Coach, Ja Havens, says Mitchell was an easy nomination for the award. He says giving back is a part of who Mitchell is, and as a coach, he's glad to see his players be leaders on and off the court.

"He does it on his own," Havens said. "He would be involved if we weren't as a team. If that was not something we did as a program, Miles Mitchell would be involved in helping to make his campus better, and reaching out to the young people in the Ada community and surrounding areas."

Of the 201 nominees, a final roster of 20 players will be selected in February.
