OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Collapsed pavement along a stretch of the Turner Turnpike is prompting transportation officials to close a 10-mile stretch of the interstate Monday night.
Oklahoma Turnpike Authority spokesman Jack Damrill says eastbound traffic from Oklahoma City to Tulsa will be diverted from Interstate 44 at Chandler beginning at 8 p.m. Monday. Motorists will be able to re-enter the turnpike at Stroud, and Damrill says toll fees will be adjusted accordingly. The closure is tentatively expected to last until 3 a.m.
Damrill says this year's heavy rains and increased traffic are likely responsible for the failure of the pavement.
Turnpike officials say two lanes of traffic already were closed in the area for ongoing construction, leaving officials with no options for diverting traffic.
