Elizabeth Smart-Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Abduction survivor Elizabeth Smart is scheduled to speak in Tulsa this summer at an event sponsored by the Girl Scouts of America.

Smart is scheduled to speak Aug. 10 at the University of Tulsa's Reynolds Center.

Smart was 14 when she was kidnapped at knifepoint from her family home in 2002. She was held captive for nine months before she was rescued. Street preacher Brian David Mitchell was convicted in 2010 of Smart's kidnapping and sexual assault and is serving a life prison sentence.

Since her rescue, Smart has become increasingly involved in advocacy work for crime victims. She formed the Elizabeth Smart Foundation, which is aimed largely at protecting children from abuse through prevention and education.
