TULSA, Okla. (AP) - A mental competency exam has been ordered for an 18-year-old charged with plotting to shoot fellow students at Bartlesville High School.
District Judge Curtis DeLapp ordered the exam Wednesday for Sammie Eaglebear Chavez, who police say tried to recruit classmates to help in the shooting plan and threatened to kill those who didn't join him.
Chavez's mother has said she doesn't believe he would've carried out such an attack.
A spokeswoman at the county court clerk's office says arraignment is set for May 1.
Police arrested Chavez Dec. 14 and allege he wanted to lure students into the school auditorium and begin shooting them after chaining the doors shut.
A police affidavit says Chavez told students he planned to place bombs at the doors that he'd detonate when police arrived.
