LAWTON, Okla. (AP) - A jury has recommended a death sentence for an Oklahoma man convicted in the 2009 killings of a Comanche County couple.
Last week, the jury convicted Mica Martinez of first-degree murder for the deaths of Carl and Martha Faye Miller. The jury handed down the recommendation after six hours of deliberations Tuesday.
Prosecutors argued for the death penalty, saying Martinez's crime was especially heinous and cruel. He's accused of beating the couple at their home in Cache.
Martinez's attorney urged the jury to recommend a life sentence, saying Martinez suffered from severe depression and had been drinking heavily at the time of the killings.
A formal sentencing is scheduled for July 15.
