TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Tulsa Mayor Dewey Bartlett says the decision to name a US Navy combat ship the USS Tulsa is an "honor."
Bartlett said Friday that that the naming of the littoral combat ship - or LCS - recognizes the bravery and service to the country made by military veterans from Tulsa.
The ships are named to recognize cities that are one of the five most-populated communities in a state. The USS Tulsa will become the second ship that has been named for Oklahoma's second largest city.
The LCS is designed to be fast and agile and able to execute missions close to shore that include mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare.
