WOODWARD, Okla. (AP) - An Arkansas woman serving a Mormon mission in Oklahoma has died after a pickup truck hit her bicycle, according to church officials.
The Oklahoman reported Sunday that 22-year-old Alesa Smith, of Benton, Ark., was riding her bicycle Friday night when she was hit by a pickup truck.
Nolan Taylor, an Oklahoma City-based official with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, says Smith had been working in several cities throughout Oklahoma for the past 10 months.
Woodward police did not release details about the crash.
Serving on a mission is a rite of passage for many young Mormons, who serve at hundreds of missions throughout the world.
Taylor said Smith's parents were making funeral arrangements.
