OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - An Oklahoma appeals court has upheld the life prison sentence of a woman convicted of first-degree murder in the death of her 3-year-old son.
The Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals handed down the decision Monday for 27-year-old Tye Shafer. Shafer was convicted by an Oklahoma County jury in connection with the Sept. 16, 2009, death of her son, Eli Johnson. Prosecutors alleged Shafer was aware that her boyfriend was abusing the child and did nothing to stop it.
The boyfriend, 25-year-old Eddie Valdez, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life without parole in the case.
Among other things, the appeals court rejected Shafer's claim that her life prison sentence is excessive. Her appellate attorney, Wyndi Hobbs, did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.
