OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A psychiatrist from Edmond has been sentenced to 2½ years in prison for health care fraud.
U.S. Attorney Sanford Coats said Wednesday that 53-year-old Dr. Amar Bhandary was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Joe Heaton.
Bhandary was originally charged with 53 counts of illegal distribution of controlled substances that prosecutors say resulted in the deaths of five people. His trial on those charges ended in mistrial with a hung jury in April.
Prosecutors in May charged Bhandary with health care fraud and the doctor pleaded guilty in May to submitting false claims to Medicare.
Bhandary disappeared following the original indictment and was later arrested in Germany after arriving there on a flight from India.
