OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Speaker of the House T.W. Shannon says he supports a plan to increase pay for state workers using a merit-based system, but rejected the idea of across-the-board pay hikes.

During The Associated Press' annual legislative forum on Wednesday, Shannon said he believes state employees in Oklahoma "can anticipate some kind of pay increase."

But the Lawton Republican described across-the-board pay increases for state workers "a relic of the past." He says he expects lawmakers this year will look to create a system for pay raises that rewards high performing state workers, not just those with the most years of experience.

Shannon also said he will propose a program that allows state agencies to keep some savings they are able to achieve to reward workers.
