OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A Democratic state representative from far southeast Oklahoma says he'll run for the state Senate seat being vacated by state Sen. Jerry Ellis of Valliant.
Freshman state Rep. Curtis McDaniel of Smithville said Tuesday he plans to run for Ellis' state Senate District 5 seat. A former House member, Ellis is term-limited in 2014. A special election has been called to fill the final two years of his term, and the election dates will coincide with the regular 2014 cycle.
McDaniel is a longtime teacher and school administrator from southeast Oklahoma who was elected in 2012. He says protecting the region's water supply will be one of his top priorities.
Senate District 5 includes Choctaw, McCurtain and Pushmataha counties, as well as parts of Atoka and LeFlore counties.
