Oklahoma House committee passes personhood bill

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Members of an Oklahoma House panel have approved legislation that would grant "personhood" status to human embryos.

The Oklahoma House's Public Health Committee voted 7-4 for the Senate-passed measure Tuesday and sent it to the full House.

The bill provides embryos and fetuses "all the rights, privileges and immunities" of other citizens. Supporters say it's modeled after a 1986 Missouri law that the U.S. Supreme Court has said is constitutional.

Abortion-rights supporters oppose the measure and say government should not interfere in the lives of its citizens.

The Oklahoma State Medical Association says the bill could affect reproductive medicine and ban certain forms of birth control.

A petition drive is under way to put a similar measure on the November ballot. At least 22 states are pushing personhood measures.

Physical life begins at the moment of conception, not at birth, and for a couple to kill an unborn child simply because they don't want it there is not any different than killing a neighbor because you don't want him in the neighborhood. When two people crawl into a bed together, they (not just the woman) have exercised all the freedom of choice they are entitled to. Take responsibility for your actions and stop looking for excuses and some easy way out. If you can create it, you can live with it.

Really? I think this is a great bill! If women were so concerned with having a say about their own body then they should not create another life inside it. GREAT JOB OKLAHOMA!

This bill disgusts me and so does Oklahoma. By all means, Oklahoma, keep taking away women's rights. The next thing you know we won't be able to vote or own property anymore. I mean, what's the right to vote compared to the right to say what happens to your own body.

"The bill provides embryos and fetuses "all the rights, privileges and immunities" of other citizens." This bill would really aggravate me if we citizens actually had any REAL rights left. But since freedom is a thing of the past then I guess it doesn't really matter much. I just wish politicians would stop wasting our time with these emotional issues that have no other purpose but to distract us from the REAL issues. You cannot legislate someone's opinion! To do so will always be unconstitutional.
