MOORE, Okla. (AP) - Republican U.S. Rep. Tom Cole is telling constituents that it would be a mistake to threaten a government shutdown unless the federal health overhaul is overturned.
Cole said at a town hall-style meeting in Moore on Tuesday that a bill overturning the health overhaul wouldn't pass the Senate and that a shutdown would cost millions of civilian jobs.
About 100 people in attendance cheered loudly at the mention of overturning the health overhaul.
Cole said a government shutdown could create a backlash against Republicans, jeopardizing the chances of winning majorities in both the U.S. House and Senate.
Cole has other town hall meetings scheduled for Wednesday in Norman and Friday in Pauls Valley.
Cole is serving his sixth term representing the 4th Congressional District.
