OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - A sentencing hearing for a former leader of the Oklahoma Senate has started in federal court, with government lawyers asking about work Mike Morgan did for private firms.

Morgan was convicted of bribery in March and faces up to 10 years in prison. He has asked for probation.

In Oklahoma City federal court Tuesday, government lawyers asked witnesses about retainers Morgan held from private entities.

The former Stillwater legislator was acquitted on extortion and mail fraud charges, but jurors said he accepted $12,000 from an assisted living center and attempted to influence a bill to ease regulations on the nursing home industry. Morgan said the money was legal fees for work he did for the company. Prosecutors alleged he did no legal work.
