Community support saves Thanksgiving meal for homeless

PARIS, TX -- A Thanksgiving meal that feeds the less fortunate in Paris was on the verge of being cancelled, but many local residents and businesses stepped up assuring it wouldn't end this year.

For over 30-years Christians in Action Director Don Walker has been providing meals to the homeless and less fortunate every Thanksgiving, but due to a lack of funds, Walker didn't think he would be able to have the meal this year.

Creative Candy Designs owner Melissa Wickersham told Walker that she wouldn't allow the tradition to end. She made a few phone calls and Paris Regional Medical Center said they would provide and cook all the food needed for the dinner.

"Anytime there has ever been a fire or tornado or anything along those lines, Paris has always pulled together," said Wickersham. "That's like the philosophy of Paris, Texas, if somebody's in need we are going to be there."

"Everybody in the community has rallied and they're just non-stop, more people call everyday," said PRMC nurse Tara LaMendola.

The dinner will be next Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., If you would like to help contact Melissa Wickersham at (903) 785-0432.
