PARIS, TX -- A newly formed group is seeking the support of Paris residents for its opposition to the city's plan to develop the area around Lake Crook.
"We need a place like Lake Crook, it's a tranquil place," said Friends of Lake Crook Park Working Co-Chairman Jackie Alsobrook.
For decades Lake Crook in Paris has been neglected. The one time popular hang out spot has fallen by the wayside for the city until recently.
Last year, Mayor Dr. A.J. Hashmi and the city council announced their plans to redevelop the lake with resort, retail and housing areas. In January, Dr. Richard and Susan Swint donated $100,000 to the city for restoring the lake as a park area, a contrast from the city's plans.
"This lake has a lot more potential and the park land around it than the council has considered," said Dr. Swint.
At recent city council meetings numerous residents have come forward in support of the Swints, eventually creating the Friends of Lake Crook Park.
"One of the purposes of the Friends of Lake Crook Park would be to have an ongoing body that could bare the burden of planning, developing, fundraising so it wouldn't be a burden to our city council," said Mrs. Swint.
The group says they will plan a petition if the council moves forward with the resort plans and the Swints say they would even go to the extreme of asking for their money back.
"I think if they're going to honor the terms that they would honor the terms or return the donation," said Dr. Swint.
The group's next scheduled meeting is set for Tuesday, May 13th under the pavilion at Lake Crook.
