New Hope Center moves to new home

PARIS, TX -- A Paris shelter that helps homeless women transition back into society now has a new place to call home.

For over 5 years, the New Hope Center of Paris has provided shelter to women in need. On Friday they moved into a bigger facility, one that will house twice as many as their old shelter.

"This new facility will be something where we can work with a larger group of population in town," said New Hope Executive Director Gay Ballew.

Ballew says she hopes to expand the shelter's reach.

"We also want to work with the shelters that are in Grayson County or Dallas, it doesn't matter where, we want to be available to help other sources," said Ballew.

County Commissioners, a local moving company and even inmates from the Lamar County Jail helped with the move.

A woman who calls the shelter home, Debrorah Slagle, is short with words when it comes to what the new facility means to her.

"Privileged," said Slagle.

For the first time, the New Hope Center will have an emergency shelter and be able to house men.

"If somebody has a disaster, loss of a home in a fire or a tornado, whatever it is, we would be able to house that family until they could get back on their feet," said Ballew.

People like Brandy Goodwin, who's about to spend her first night in the new shelter.

"I'm going to sleep like a baby," said Goodwin followed by laughter.

Ballew says the center will also work with the local Salvation Army and Christians in Action to help better serve the area.

"When they come and stay with us, they're going to see that you are valued and you are worth something," said Ballew. "In our place we want to treat everybody with respect and dignity and help them, because it could be one of us one of these days."
