PARIS, TX-- Lamar County has a new spelling bee champ -- heading to Dallas for regional's. Meet 6th grader Madeline Petrikas from Crockett Intermediate. Her winning word was cognition.
"I was really shocked, because I'm only 6th grade and she was really good and so I was worried that I wasn't going to win," said Petrikas. "I honestly didn't believe it, but I'm really happy that I did."
18 students from all over Lamar County competed this afternoon at North Lamar High School. Alex Lamb, an 8th grader from Prairiland ISD, was the runner up.
The champion of the Regional Bee qualifies for an all-expense paid trip for three to the Scripps National Bee near Washington, D. C.
