HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A woman on Texas death row is running out of court options to keep her from execution this week in Huntsville.
A federal judge joined the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Monday in refusing to stop the scheduled lethal injection of 59-year-old Suzanne Basso. She's set to die for the torture slaying of a mentally impaired man more than 15 years ago outside Houston.
Basso's attorney contends she's mentally incompetent for execution for the death of 59-year-old Louis "Buddy" Musso.
He's taking the case Tuesday to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Basso was convicted of being ringleader of a group intent on stealing Musso's money and benefits. She'd be the 14th woman executed in the U.S. and the fifth in Texas in modern times.
