CLEVELAND, Texas (AP) - A boy who fell out of a canoe and a man who tried to save him both drowned during a religious retreat at a Southeast Texas lake.
The San Jacinto County Sheriff's Office says the bodies were recovered Sunday afternoon from the small lake near Cleveland.
Chief Deputy Robert Long said Monday that neither victim could swim. They're identified as 15-year-old Lewis Aguilar Berrios and 21-year-old Solero Neftal, both of Houston.
Long says the teenager was in a canoe that capsized Sunday morning. Neftal was in another canoe when he jumped into the water to try to rescue the boy. Neither victim wore a life jacket.
The retreat was organized by Gracia Divina Ministries in Houston.
