DALLAS (AP) - Dallas school officials today laid off hundreds of teachers in an attempt to deal with a projected $84 million budget deficit.
About 375 teachers - three percent of the district's teaching workforce - were let go.
Some 40 assistant principals and counselors were also given notice.
Superintendent Michael Hinojosa says it's been a day of "tremendous sadness" throughout the district.
Hinojsa said the extreme cost-cutting measures will not completely resolve the projected budget deficit.
