HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Zoo is mourning following death of a 2-year-old elephant named Mac.
Mac - the largest Asian elephant born in captivity at 384 pounds - died Sunday night after contracting elephant herpesvirus.
Mac was born in October 2006, and the zoo says that Mac was playful, intelligent, curious and mischievous - and quickly became a favorite of zoo staff and visitors.
Zoo spokesman Brian Hill says Mac's mother, Shanti, and aunt, Methai, were with him when he died.
A necropsy will be conducted.
