HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) - A Houston-area man apologized before he was executed tonight for fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend's sister -- after the couple broke up.
The 1994 attack that sent George Whitaker III to death row also left his former girlfriend's mother and another sister seriously hurt.
Whitaker expressed love to family members and asked for forgiveness over the attack at a home in Crosby. His ex-girlfriend, Catina Carrier, wasn't at the residence during the shootings.
The inmate said: "I apologize for your pain and suffering," mentioning the parents of victim "Kiki" Carrier by name. They weren't at the execution.
Whitaker asked that the Lord give them strength, adding, "I pray Lord, please forgive me."
He asked his stepfather, brother and a friend who watched through a window to take care of his two daughters.
"Continue to pray for me. I am fine. I've made peace with God. Please don't ever forget me," Whitaker said.
As the lethal drugs began flowing, Whitaker said, "Take care. I'm going on to sleep."
Whitaker was the 16th Texas death row prisoner executed this year.
