Icy conditions cause wrecks in North Texas

UNDATED (AP) - Numerous wrecks during rush hour tonight are being blamed on freezing rain and drizzle that slammed North Texas.

Dallas police say they received at least 173 calls to 911 reporting accidents.

Police said there were at least 93 calls regarding major accidents and 80 calls reporting minor accidents.

It wasn't immediately clear how many might have been duplicate calls.

Ice on bridges in the "High Five" area prompted police to close portions of eastbound Interstate 635 to U.S. 75 northbound for a time.

Television footage and traffic cams showed long lines of brake lights on freeways and highways in the Dallas area. Footage also showed vehicles trying to manuever on thin sheets of ice.

A winter weather advisory was in effect until 11 a.m. tomorrow in North Texas.

The threat of freezing rain extended all the way to the Texas Gulf Coast with the possibility of trace amounts of ice on bridges and overpasses in the northern areas of the Coastal Bend.
