AUSTIN (AP) - Some legislators today voted to recommend replacing the five-member appointed Texas Transportation Commission with a single commissioner.
Lawmakers have been looking at the workings of the Texas Department of Transportation.
The Sunset Advisory Commission voted 7-5 for the recommendation, which would have to win approval in the full 2009 Legislature to take effect.
Several on the sunset panel voted against the proposal.
Spokeswoman Allison Castle said Gov. Rick Perry, who has made highway construction a cornerstone of his administration, isn't focusing on how many commissioners will oversee the transportation agency.
She said in a prepared statement that Perry is concentrating on how Texas will finance the transportation infrastructure, quote "that we must have."
The sunset panel made a number of other recommendations for changes at the agency, including establishing more legislative oversight.
The Texas Legislature convenes Jan. 13.
