Thousands of mourners pay tribute to slain officer

DALLAS (AP) - Music and prayers were part of the emotional funeral for a slain Dallas police officer.

Several thousand mourners, including hundreds of officers from around the country, turned out Friday for services for 43-year-old Sr. Cpl. Norman Smith.

Smith, who was a member of the department's gang unit, was shot to death Tuesday night while attempting to serve a warrant. Charles Patrick Payne is jailed on a capital murder charge in the killing.

The lid on Smith's U.S. flag-draped coffin was closed by his wife, Lt. Regina Smith, who wore her Dallas police uniform as she bid farewell to her husband of 18 years.

Chief David Kunkle described the slain lawman as "a great, great, police officer."
