Lawsuit settlement features free cosmetics

HOUSTON (AP) - Free cosmetics are being given away at some department stores in Texas as part of a national class-action lawsuit settlement.

A 2003 California lawsuit filed against department stores and cosmetics manufacturers alleged the businesses conspired to keep
prestige cosmetics prices high.

The case was settled with no wrong doing admitted. The result was a $175 million giveaway in which each eligible consumer gets one free piece of make up or fragrance worth from $18 to $25 - on the honor system.

Ginger Reeder, a Dallas-based spokeswoman for Neiman Marcus, tells the Houston Chronicle that there will be one table, flanked by signs full of legalese, where the products will be available.

Anyone is eligible for one freebie from Chanel, Christian Dior, Lancome or others if they purchased department store cosmetics between May 1994 and July 2003.

The freebies will stop in seven days or when they are all gone, whichever comes first.

This is what is wrong with our system. I guess you have to work in retail to understand how it works. This is how it works, Cosmetic lines in Department stores are prestigious lines ( can't be found in lower end retailers), they are the same price at every store every day to be fair to all retailers. The way they give a discount is by giving away gifts several time a year. Each store has a gift at different time (isn't that a good thing?). Point is if you can't afford the items buy something else, lower end retailers carry more affordable lines. As for the ones that are complaining about what is being given, have you ever heard the saying beggars can't be choosers? I think it is silly that these stores and cosmetic lines are being forced to give away their products to people that probably never even spent money on their products. The up side is when people try these free products it will be clear why they cost so much and might become customers for life! Either way be thankful!

Anonymous, night cream and lotion sound great to me! Everyone I know takes care of their skin using products such as those items. Which department store did you go to? Unless I missed something, I don't know where to go. Thanks.

I went yesterday and the stuff they are offering for free is not really anything anyone would use. Its night cream, lotion, etc. not lipstick, showdow, powder , etc. Why couldn't they offer something of real use! Oh yeah, they know we will still buy that stuff. LOSERS!

And I thought the department stores were scary when they were having a clearance sale! I'm waiting for the stampede of freebie crazed soccer moms who will end up beating each other senseless over the last tube of lipstick.
