Air Force Nurse Charged in 3 Patient Deaths

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A 35-year-old Air Force nurse in San Antonio is charged with giving lethal amounts of medication to three terminally ill patients in his care.

Capt. Michael Fontana was formally charged in military court with deliberately giving three Wilford Hall Medical Center patients lethal amounts of medication.

He's also facing a charge of conduct unbecoming an officer for allegedly changing a medical document.

A call to Fontana's home wasn't immediately returned today.

The Air Force began investigating in August after another staffer discovered irregularities in Fontana's administration of
medications.

Fontana was removed from duty as soon as the irregularity was reported.

An Article 32 hearing, the military equivalent to a grand jury proceeding, will be done in the next few weeks.
