Austin police shoot 1 dead, wound another

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - No Austin officers were hurt when some people threw rocks and bottles after a police shooting left one man dead and another hurt.

Sgt. Richard Stresing says an officer was checking a robbery report early Monday when he saw three people asleep in a car parked at the Walnut Creek Apartments.

Police Chief Art Acevedo (ah-suh-VAY'-doh) says an officer fatally shot an 18-year-old man who awoke and reached for a weapon stuck in his pants. Acevedo says another man was wounded and is in stable condition at Brackenridge Hospital. The other occupant was detained.

Police in riot gear were on hand later when a crowd of about 100 people gathered. Some police were seen toting shotguns.

The officer involved in the shooting is being removed from patrol, pending a review.
