Trial set for defendant in TYC sex abuse case

MONAHANS, Texas (AP) - A former state juvenile jail official has been ordered to stand trial on Dec. 15 on charges that he sexually abused teenage inmates.

The trial date for Ray Brookins was set at hearing Thursday in Ward County. State District Judge Jay Gibson also ordered that Brookins' trial be rescheduled for Odessa in nearby Ector County.

Prosecutors and Brookins' attorney wanted the case moved from Ward County, where the school is located, because of potentially prejudicial pretrial publicity.

Brookins is a former administrator at the Texas Youth Commission's West Texas State School in remote Pyote.

Gibson didn't set a trial date for John Paul Hernandez. He's another former TYC official from Pyote also accused of sexually abusing teen inmates.
