AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Police in Texas say a woman falsely claiming she was pregnant tried to kidnap a baby and kill the child's mother, but her plan was foiled after being stopped for speeding as she fled to Mexico.
Forty-year-old Margarita Nino remained in the Travis County Jail on Friday on two felony kidnapping charges. Her bail was $100,000 on each charge. The jail had no information on whether she has an attorney.
Police say on Tuesday, after telling friends she was in labor and heading to the hospital, Nino instead allegedly drugged and kidnapped a mother and her 2-week-old infant.
Zavala County authorities stopped Nino for speeding and detained the baby and his mother, 34-year-old Blanca Zacarias, because she did not have identification. Once separated from Nino, Zacarias said she had been kidnapped. The mother and infant were not hurt.
