LAREDO, Texas (AP) - A 22-year-old Salvadoran man has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for re-entering the United States illegally.
Jesus Alexi Pineda had previously been deported in 2007 after serving time on a burglary conviction in Rockville, Md. During the burglary, he stole a government laptop and external hard drive that contained the names, Social Security numbers and birth dates of nearly 20 million veterans and active-duty military personnel.
The information was encrypted and the equipment was recovered.
But when he was apprehended in April on a ranch north of Laredo, Pineda was charged criminally with illegal entry. He pleaded guilty in June and was sentenced Wednesday to 3 years and 10 months in federal prison.
