SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A rookie San Antonio police officer fatally shot a suspect in a pre-dawn gas station holdup.
A police department statement says 19-year-old Julio Molinar died at Brooke Army Medical Center shortly after the shooting on Interstate 410 in northeast San Antonio.
The statement says Officer Michael Ruiz graduated from the police academy five months ago. He's been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the police investigation.
Authorities say Ruiz drove into the parking lot of a Valero gas station around 1 a.m. Tuesday and saw Molinar run from the gas station. He says the Molinar was masked by a bandanna and was holding a shotgun and cash.
According to the police statement, witnesses report Ruiz ordered
the man to stop and drop his weapon. Instead, Molinar pointed it at
the officer, so Ruiz shot him.
