WASHINGTON (AP) - The San Antonio missions will appear on
commemorative quarters the U.S. Mint plans to issue.
The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park will be the 49th design to be minted as part of the U.S. Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program. In a statement issued by the U.S. Mint on Wednesday, the Texas quarter is scheduled for release in 2019.
Spanish clerics built the chain of missions along the San Antonio River in the 18th century to bring the Roman Catholic faith to the region's indigenous population.
The U.S. Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program is a multiyear program authorized by a 2008 federal law. The law directs the Mint to circulate 56 circulating quarters with designs on the "tails" sides honoring U.S. national parks and other national sites. The "heads" side's design will be a 1932 portrait of George Washington.
