Newspaper seeks UT System tax returns

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The state attorney general's office is
being asked whether the University of Texas System must provide its
tax returns to the Austin American-Statesman.
The newspaper Friday reported it has filed an open-records
request for the past three returns.
The UT System has asked Attorney General Greg Abbott to confirm
that state and federal laws allow withholding the Exempt
Organization Business Income Tax Return. A ruling is expected
The system, with 15 academic and health campuses, describes its
online accountability report as a national model of conveying
information to the public.
System attorney Barry Burgdorf says the IRS is doing an audit,
which so far has just focused on the flagship Austin campus.
Burgdorf says there is no indication of wrongdoing.
Colleges and universities must pay federal taxes on income from
activities unrelated to their nonprofit status.
