Alamo's embattled Daughters find closure in report

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The Alamo's longtime caretakers say they've found closure in a scathing report from the Texas attorney general's office that blasted the group as dysfunctional and financially inept.

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas said no "organization is perfect" in a statement released Tuesday. It served as the nonprofit's formal response to state investigators who found the Daughters to be bumbling stewards to the state's most iconic landmark in recent years.

The report said the Daughters neglected critical preservation projects at the Alamo and alleged they misappropriated state funds. Prosecutors, however, say they won't press charges.

Karen Thompson, president general of the Daughters, said the group is mindful of past mistakes and will use the report as a learning tool. She said the report closes the book on the controversy.
