CALDWELL, Texas (AP) - A sheriff's deputy has been fatally shot while serving a warrant at a home in Central Texas.

The Burleson County Sheriff's Office says Sgt. Adam Sowders died after being shot shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday.

A statement from the sheriff's office in Caldwell, about 70 miles northeast of Austin, says suspects are in custody. Sheriff's spokeswoman Christine Labertew had no immediate information on how many people were detained and she declined to describe the purpose of the warrant.

She says a team of officers "took fire" while entering the residence in south Burleson County, and that this is when Sowders was shot. Labertew says nobody else was hurt.

Further details weren't immediately released.
