Dallas first ladies conference features Bushes

DALLAS,TX. (AP) - A Dallas conference on first ladies featuring Laura Bush and Barbara Bush started with a discussion among historians on the influence of the women who have held the post.

About 300 people attended the conference Monday, hosted by the George W. Bush Presidential Center.

Among the presidential wives discussed in the morning panel were Dolley Madison, whose influence in Washington went far beyond her time as first lady, and Lady Bird Johnson, who had the hard task of filling the role after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

On Monday afternoon, presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin will moderate a conversation with Laura Bush and Barbara Bush.

The conference is being held on the campus of Southern Methodist University, where the presidential center is under construction.
