AUSTIN, TX -- Fallen Grayson County Sheriff's Deputy Chad Key was honored by Governor Rick Perry Thursday.
Key's wife, April, was in Austin to accept a Star of Texas award on his behalf.
The award honors peace officers, firefighters, emergency responders and citizens who have been seriously injured or killed in the line of duty or while assisting a first responder.
Governor Perry spoke at the event.
Governor Perry said, "Anyone in this room knows that this calling and this noble service brings a great element of danger. They know that putting themselves in harms way will carry a great cost."
Also honored were the West Texas first responders killed in the fertilizer plant explosion in April and former Kaufman County DA Mike Mclelland and his wife Cynthia, who were murdered in March.
