TYLER, Texas (AP) - An East Texas police officer has been charged with using his law enforcement position to acquire hydrocodone by fraud.

Federal prosecutors say Canton police Officer James Melvin Bradshaw faces six counts of acquiring a controlled substance by misrepresentation.

Bradshaw was arrested Thursday - a day after being indicted - and went before a magistrate in Tyler. He remains in custody pending a detention hearing Monday.

The indictment says Bradshaw six times last year allegedly used his job to obtain hydrocodone by fraud, deception or misrepresentation from people with legitimate prescriptions.

Canton police on Friday didn't immediately provide information on Bradshaw's job status.

If convicted, Bradshaw faces up to four years in prison on each count. An attorney for Bradshaw couldn't immediately be located.

Canton is 50 miles southeast of Dallas.
