DALLAS (AP) - Medical professionals have raised concerns about eight Dallas County cases of the foodborne illness cyclosporiasis.

Experts are trying to determine whether the North Texas cases confirmed this week are part of an outbreak that's reached parts of the Midwest. Dozens of cases have been reported in Iowa and Nebraska. Symptoms include lingering diarrhea, fatigue and nausea.

Humans can get the cyclospora parasite by consuming contaminated water and fresh fruits and vegetables not properly cleaned. Treatment includes use of antibiotics.

Dr. Christopher Perkins with the Dallas County Department of Health and Human Services says agency officials are trying to find the source of the infection.

Records show in the past 12 years just a dozen people in Dallas County were diagnosed with the cyclospora infection.
