Extradited Zetas boss appears in Texas court

LAREDO, Texas (AP) - Authorities say a high-ranking Zetas cartel member arrested last year in Mexico has been extradited to South Texas in a drug and money laundering case.

Ivan Velasquez Caballero, also known as "El Taliban" or "50," appeared in court Friday in Laredo. A detention hearing and arraignment are set for Dec. 3.

Velasquez Caballero, who's from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, was arrested by Mexican officers in September 2012. He was transferred Thursday to Laredo on charges of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute drugs and launder money. Velasquez Caballero faces life in prison if convicted.

He's among 34 suspects named in an indictment that alleges kidnapping, drug and firearms conspiracies, trafficking, money laundering and conspiracy to kidnap a U.S. citizen in a foreign country. Fifteen people have been convicted.''
