BRYAN, Texas (AP) - Health officials are working to determine the source of an E. coli outbreak in Central Texas that resulted in five people being hospitalized.

Three of the victims have since been released and Brazos County Health Authority Dr. Eric Wilke said Wednesday officials are reviewing the foods the victims ate recently to find any links. Of those initially hospitalized, two were brothers under the age of 5 and three were adults.

Health workers were investigating eight possible cases of infection but as of Wednesday had confirmed the five.

The virulent strain of the bacteria can cause kidney failure and prove fatal, particularly for children and the elderly. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps and vomiting.

Infection can be avoided by washing one's hands after handling raw meat and thoroughly rinsing fruits and vegetables.
