DALLAS (AP) - Former U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison called for more funding for research universities amid a debate over whether higher education budgets should be cut.
The former Republican senator said Tuesday that the federal and state governments should make a priority to fund research universities. Hutchison described government funding of higher education as planting "the seed corn" for research and development.
Hutchison spoke at an event of business and civic leaders at UT Southwestern Medical Center, along with University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa.
Lawmakers and regents have been mired in a battle over university research and the future of UT President Bill Powers. The legislature passed a resolution in February supporting Powers, amid accusations that some regents want him out.
