HOUSTON (AP) - A jury has started deliberating the fate of an ex-Houston police officer accused of participating in the beating of a black teenage burglary suspect.
Drew Ryser is charged with misdemeanor official oppression and faces up to a year in jail if convicted. Jurors got the case after closing arguments in his trial Tuesday.
Defense attorneys told jurors Ryser was a "brave officer" whose only interest was to the handcuff the teenager and not to mistreat him.
Prosecutors asked jurors for a conviction, saying their decision will tell police officers what is acceptable and what won't be tolerated.
Ryser is one of four officers fired and later indicted in the incident.
Security video from the March 2010 arrest appears to show several officers hitting 15-year-old Chad Holley.
