AUSTIN, TX -- In Texas a new laws went into effect Monday aimed to improve safety for Tx-DOT workers.
The new laws require drivers approaching roadside Tx-DOT workers to move over to the lane farthest away from them.
Drivers who can't safely change lanes are required to slow down to 20 miles below the posted speed limit.
According to Tx-DOT spokesman Tray Turner, "it's still a very serious problem. Since 1938, over 100 Tx-DOT employees have been killed by motorists."
The law already applies to drivers when approaching police, fire, ems, and tow trucks.
