AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Texas Gov. Rick Perry criticized an impeachment investigation of one of his appointments to the University of Texas System regents, calling the proceedings "extraordinary political theater."

A state House panel is investigating whether Wallace Hall should be removed from the university board. Hall has been accused of misusing his office in an attempt to force out Austin campus president Bill Powers.

Powers and the governor have clashed in recent years over tuition and graduation rates, the roles of teaching and research, and other issues. Powers is believed to have a slim majority of support from the nine-member board that was appointed entirely by Perry.

Speaking Wednesday after voting in Austin, Perry said he supports Hall , and hopes the House panel clears him of doing anything wrong.
