BLACKWELL, Texas (AP) - A pilot has been killed in the crash of his single-engine plane in rural West Texas.

The Texas Department of Public Safety on Monday identified the victim as 71-year-old Weldon Pat Oden of Blackwell.

Trooper Fred Biddle says the wreckage was discovered Sunday night about 7 miles west of Blackwell in Nolan County.

Biddle says plane took off about midday Sunday from a nearby private airstrip. Relatives reported Oden missing after he never returned from the flight. Officials believe Oden earlier had been working on his plane, a Kitfox.

Federal Aviation Administration authorities are trying to determine what caused the crash near Blackwell, about 50 miles southwest of Abilene.
